David Graham

David Graham was born in Abington, Pennsylvania.  He received a BA from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and his MFA in Photography from the Tyler School of Art.  Graham studied under Ray Metzker and Will Larson and was mentored by neighbor, Emmet Gowan.  He has taught at Moore College of Art and is currently on the faculty at The University of the Arts.

Graham has published several books of his work including Taking Liberties, Ay, Cuba!, Alone Together, as well as American Beauty and Land of the Free, which were published by Aperture, and most recently Almost Paradise  published by Pond Press.  His work has appeared in The New York Times, Harper’s, The New Yorker, and The Philadelphia Inquirer.  He has had solo exhibitions at the International Center of Photography in New York, the Institute for Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, and The Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art.  He has also shown at the Museum for Contemporary Photography in Chicago, The Delaware Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia.  Graham has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and Nikon.  His work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Biblioteque Nationale in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Tirelessly traveling the United States, Graham captures the colorful, sometimes surreal, and often bizarre, in the thoroughly American landscape.  Graham seeks out subjects that celebrate our singular freedom of expression in colorful roadside attractions and general oddities.  Chronicling the American scene with his unique sensibility and acknowledging popular forms of American photography: the snapshot, the family portrait and vacation pictures, Graham brings relevance to the creativity and dreams of the common man.
