From July 14th through September
5th, Gallery 339 is pleased to present a selection of
work by artist Sarah Stolfa from her award-winning series, The Regulars. This exhibition
coincides with the release of Stolfas first book, The Regulars, published by Artisan Books. The
Regulars will be available beginning July 1, 2009 and includes an introduction by best-selling
author Jonathan Franzen. The show will include images that have not previously been exhibited,
and will be presented alongside this summers Yale MFA Photo exhibition, which Stolfa herself
participated in last year.
Gallery 339 originally showed images
from The Regulars in 2006, just as the series was
completed. The series was subsequently exhibited in New York, and images from The Regulars
have been included in art fairs and museum exhibitions around the country. They have also been
reproduced in many publications, including The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker.
In his introduction, Franzen says about Stolfa and The Regulars, The magic of good portraiture,
such as Stolfas, is to frame and de-reference human subjects in such a way as to evade our
everyday judgments and restore the subjects to a natural world in which everything is interesting,
everything incites sympathy and wonder, everything is worth a careful second look. Shes
a
classical short-storyist of the camera.
Stolfa made this remarkable body of work
while tending bar at McGlincheys (one of
Philadelphias oldest taverns) and while still an undergraduate at Drexel University. She
earned
her BS in photography from Drexel University, Philadelphia, in 2005 and her MFA in Photography
from Yale University in 2008. She is represented by galleries in Philadelphia and New York, and
her work has been collected by museums around the country, including the Philadelphia Museum
of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Stolfa currently resides in Philadelphia and is the
founder and Executive Director of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, a non-profit organization
which will open this summer.
Gallery 339 is located at 339 South 21st
Street (at the corner of Pine Street) in Center
City, Philadelphia. The Gallery is open Tuesday Saturday, 10:00 AM 6:00 PM, and
Sunday and
Monday by appointment. For more information, contact Martin McNamara at 215-731-1530 or
